European privacy laws present challenges to multinational companies responding to discovery that calls for the production of personal data about European citizens. European concepts of privacy and the protections that European Union (EU) law provides are extremely broad by American standards. European law bans the export of personal data to countries that do not provide adequate protection and, to complicate matters further, the EU considers U.S. data protection laws and privacy principles inadequate.
