William T. Hogan III is a partner with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Boston practicing in the areas of business litigation, consumer finance litigation, governmental relations and administrative law, insurance, and litigation.
Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Hogan was a founding partner of a successful Boston law firm. He is an experienced litigator with wide-ranging experience in the United States District Court, as well as the Superior Court and District Courts in Massachusetts. He has been in private practice since 1985.
In 1999, Mr. Hogan served as outside counsel to Congressman Martin Meehan during the impeachment hearings before the House Judiciary Committee. He reviewed all documents and evidence released by independent counsel Kenneth Starr and provided advice to Congressman Meehan in the performance of his duties as a member of the Judiciary Committee.
Mr. Hogan has served on the Transition teams of two Treasurers of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He also chaired the Operations Subcommittee of Treasurer Tim Cahill’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission Transition Team. As a member of the team, Mr. Hogan was responsible for administration and personnel matters and was involved in the process of interviewing candidates for the position of Chairman of the Commission.
Mr. Hogan began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County from 1982 through 1985, where he prosecuted numerous jury and bench trials. He is also a former Training Coordinator for the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council.
Since 1980, Mr. Hogan has collaborated with United States District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns in the publication of The Massachusetts Criminal Law: A District Court Prosecutors Guide, a criminal trial practice handbook that is considered "the Bible" by prosecutors, defense counsel and judges throughout the Commonwealth.
Mr. Hogan is active in the American and Massachusetts Bar Associations. He has served as Chair of the ABA's General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division and currently serves as the Division’s Delegate to the ABA’s House of Delegates. He has served as a member of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Standing Committee on Public Education, and currently is a member of the Standing Committee on Group and Prepaid Legal Services. He is a past Chair of the Massachusetts Bar Association's Judicial Administration Section.
Mr. Hogan is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Massachusetts Bar, the U.S District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Hogan serves on the Board of Trustees for Suffolk University and is a Board member of the Westfield State College Foundation. He has received the Outstanding Alumni Service Award from the Suffolk University Law School Alumni Association.
Mr. Hogan earned a Juris Doctor in 1981 from the Suffolk University Law School. He earned an undergraduate degree, cum laude, in 1977 from Westfield State College.
