John C.B. Smith is of counsel to Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia.
Mr. Smith has an extensive history of community, business and professional involvement. He is former Chairman of the Board of The South Financial Group and of Carolina First Bank and Mercantile Bank. He is also Chairman Emeritus of the University of South Carolina Educational Foundation.
Mr. Smith has served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina and the South Carolina Education Lottery Commission. He has served as a past director of the Central Carolina Community Foundation, and as a director for several financial institutions. Mr. Smith has also served as Chairman of the Board of Visitors for Columbia College and as a Chairman of the USC School of Law Partnership Board. He is a life member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board of the Midlands.
Other past memberships include: House of Delegates, South Carolina Bar Association; Executive Committee, Richland County Bar Association; past Vice-Chairman and Past Executive Committee Member, South Carolina Supreme Court Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline; and past State Chairman, Lawyer Pilots Bar Association.
Mr. Smith is also the owner of John C.B. Smith Real Estate in Columbia.
Before joining Nelson Mullins, Mr. Smith worked for another law firm where he served as managing partner and Chairman of the Executive Committee from 1989 until 1992. He is a former adjunct professor of trial advocacy for the University of South Carolina School of Law.
Mr. Smith served the United States from 1970 until 1974 as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp. in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Smith is a member of the Richland County Bar, the South Carolina Bar, the American Bar, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorney’s Associations. He is admitted to practice in South Carolina, the U.S. District Court, the District of South Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals, and in the Fourth Circuit.
Mr. Smith earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1970. While in law school, Mr. Smith served as Comments Editor of the South Carolina Law Review and he was named to the Order of the Wig and Robe. In 1967, Mr. Smith earned a bachelor of arts in Mathematics degree from Washington and Lee University.
