David L. Pilson is an associate of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Atlanta office practicing in executive compensation and employee benefits law.  

Mr. Pilson counsels clients on a wide range of retirement and welfare plan issues relating to design, implementation, administration, and termination.  He has successfully represented clients in Internal Revenue Service audits of various qualified plans. Mr. Pilson routinely advises clients in HIPAA, healthcare reform, and COBRA-related matters. In addition, Mr. Pilson has experience with collective bargaining and multiemployer plan issues, including withdrawal liability. He also counsels clients with respect to employee benefits considerations in corporate mergers, acquisitions, and other transactions. Mr. Pilson is the co-author of the 2009 Aspen Publishers' Journal of Pension Benefits article "Forget the Alimony!  I Want the Survivor Benefit Instead!" regarding the implications of qualified domestic relations orders in the context of joint and survivor annuities. 

Mr. Pilson earned a Juris Doctor in 2008 from the University of Georgia School of Law, where he served for two years as a teaching assistant for the introductory Legal Research and Writing class. He was also board member of Georgia Law's Moot Court team and a pupil in the Joseph Henry Lumpkin American Inn of Courts. 

In 2003, Mr. Pilson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University.  After Stanford, Mr. Pilson was a financial analyst for a major energy company in Houston, Texas. 

Mr. Pilson is a native of Houston, where he was the first African American valedictorian in his high school's 30-year history.
