Denise M. Gunter is the managing partner in the Winston-Salem office of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP.  She practices in the areas of antitrust, healthcare antitrust, litigation, with particular emphasis on healthcare matters, and certificate of need issues.

A member of the North Carolina State Bar, Ms. Gunter is a member of the American Bar Association (Antitrust Section; Forum on Health Law); American Health Lawyers Association (Antitrust Substantive Law Subcommittee); and the North Carolina Bar Association (Antitrust and Trade Regulation Section, Chair, 2002-03). Ms. Gunter is a frequent speaker before the North Carolina Bar Association on various antitrust issues affecting healthcare providers.

Ms. Gunter's experience includes the following:

  • representing clients in North Carolina Certificate of Need cases;
  • advising clients on a variety of antitrust issues, including proper structuring of "messenger model" networks;
  • litigating a variety of healthcare related cases, including medical staff privilege cases and managed care disputes; and
  • defending clients in government antitrust investigations.

In January 2011, Business North Carolina magazine recognized Ms. Gunter as one of its Legal Elite in the area of antitrust. She has been selected by her peers as a Legal Elite in antitrust for several years. She is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the area of antitrust (2006-2011).

Active in the community, Ms. Gunter is a member of the board of trustees of Senior Services, Inc. of Forsyth County.  In 2004, Triad Business Journal recognized Ms. Gunter as one of its Women in Business for her legal work and civic contributions.

In 1986, Ms. Gunter earned a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern University. In 1989, she earned a Juris Doctor from George Washington School of Law, where she was a member of the Moot Court Board and the National Moot Court Team.
