George B. Cauthen is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia where he chairs the Firm's Bankruptcy Practice Group and practices in the area of creditor bankruptcy law. Mr. Cauthen is a member of the South Carolina Bar and the Florida Bar, and he is a Certified Specialist in Bankruptcy Law, a distinction awarded by the Supreme Court of South Carolina. Additionally, he is a Certified Specialist in Consumer and Business Bankruptcy Law, a distinction awarded by the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification.

Mr. Cauthen has extensive experience in representing creditors in bankruptcy, and he has appeared before the courts of Alabama, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin. He has worked extensively as counsel for Unsecured Creditors Committees and has served as a consultant for the Administrative Office of the U.S. Court to bankruptcy courts in New York and Puerto Rico. Internationally, he has served as a bankruptcy consultant in the Slovak Republic, in the Republic of Macedonia and in the Republic of Armenia for USAID, and in Bulgaria for the World Bank.
 
Mr. Cauthen is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth, Seventh and Eleventh Circuits, and the U.S. District Courts for the District of South Carolina, the Northern District of Florida, the Middle District of Florida, and the Southern District of Florida. Mr. Cauthen is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the American Bar Association, the Richland County Bar Association, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association. In 1995, he was admitted as the first South Carolinian to the American College of Bankruptcy, and he serves on the College's Pro Bono Committee. He served as chairman of the South Carolina Penalty Resource Center from 1988-89. From 1994-2001, he served as a member of the board of directors of the American Bankruptcy Board of Certification, and he has served on the board of directors of the Turnaround Management Association, Carolina Chapter from 1995 to 2005.
 
Mr. Cauthen has held numerous positions of leadership in the South Carolina Bar, including chairperson of the Pro Bono Program. He received the South Carolina Oasis Award for Pro Bono Work in 1997 and the South Carolina Bar Distinguished Service Award in 1994. He was named South Carolina Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year in 1993. In 2003, the State of South Carolina gave him the Order of the Palmetto award. In 2007 he was honored by the S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center with its Advocate of the Year award. He also received City Year Columbia's Idealist in Action Award for his commitment to helping others.

Widely recognized for his contributions to the legal profession, Mr. Cauthen is a 1999 recipient of the University of South Carolina School of Law Compleat Lawyer Award, the South Carolina Bar Distinguished Service Award in 1994, the William E.S. Robinson Public Service Award in Bankruptcy in 1993, and the Arthur von Briesen Award in 1989. Mr. Cauthen is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (1995-2010 editions). He is recognized on the South Carolina list of "Super Lawyers" (2008-2010).
 
Mr. Cauthen served as Clerk of Court for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of South Carolina from 1982-89. Mr. Cauthen was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1970-74 and currently holds a U.S. Coast Guard 100 Ton Merchant Marine Master License.
 
Mr. Cauthen earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1984. He earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1976 and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of South Carolina in 1970.
