Jill Gorny Sloper is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in the Firm’s Boston office. Her practice focuses on intellectual property law in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and life science fields. She also has considerable knowledge in the microbiology and immunology industries.
Ms. Sloper assists clients with patent preparation and prosecution, validity and infringement opinions, freedom to operate, intellectual property due diligence, and oppositions involving a variety of biomedical technologies.
Her notable experience includes:
- Preparing and prosecuting international patent portfolios for Bristol-Myers Squibb/Medarex, Novartis, Inotek Pharmaceutical Corp, and Celldex Therapeutics.
- Conducting freedom to operate investigations for clients ranging from small biotech start-ups to established pharmaceutical companies.
- Assessing competitive intellectual property positions and formulating responsive strategies for clients.
- Conducting IP due diligence for a leading gene therapy company in its $35 million Series B funding with new investors.
A member of the Maine, Massachusetts, and District of Columbia Bars, Ms. Sloper is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Association, the Boston Patent Law Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and the Women’s Bar Association.
Ms. Sloper recently participated in the presentation, “An Overview of Terminal Disclaimers and the Impact on Patent Term Extension (PTE) and Patent Term Adjustment (PTA)”. She is the author of note “The Fate of Surplus Cryopreserved Embryos: What is the Superior Alternative for their Disposition?", Suffolk University Law Review, Vol. XXXVII, No. 2. (2004). She is the co-author of “Pneumolysin’s Role in Pneumococcal Clearance from the Bacteremic Alcoholic Host,” Abstract, 31st Midwest Biomedical Research Forum (2000). She has been named a Rising Star by Massachusetts Super Lawyers from 2009-2011.
In 2004, Ms. Sloper earned her Juris Doctor, Intellectual Property Concentration with Distinction, from Suffolk University Law School. She earned her Master of Science in Medical Microbiology and Immunology from Creighton University in 2000. In 1998, Ms. Sloper earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Spanish from the University of San Diego.
