John F. Kuppens is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Columbia office. He has extensive experience in product liability counseling and litigation, pharmaceutical and medical device, toxic tort, premises liability, business litigation, and procurement.
In addition to South Carolina state and federal courts, Mr. Kuppens has litigated cases in the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, New Mexico, and West Virginia state and/or federal courts. He has also argued appellate matters in the South Carolina Supreme Court.

Product Liability Counseling & Litigation Practice
Mr. Kuppens has extensive experience counseling clients regarding product literature, warnings, and regulatory compliance, including counseling regarding products governed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Mr. Kuppens has experience in all aspects of product liability litigation, including accident reconstruction, metallurgy, design analysis, biomechanics, manufacturing processes, and warnings. He has defended product liability cases involving a wide range of products, including boilers, building products, food products, medical devices, electrical and gas-fired appliances, aerial lifts, textile machinery, and industrial equipment.
Memberships and Publications
Mr. Kuppens is an active member of DRI - The Voice of the Defense Bar, and he is currently serving a three-year term as a National Director. He is the immediate past chair of DRI’s Product Liability Committee, and was its 2008 seminar program chair. He was formerly the chair of its Agricultural, Construction, Mining and Industrial Equipment (ACMIE) subcommittee. He is also a former chair of DRI’s Young Lawyers Committee.
Mr. Kuppens is a member of the Legal Task Force of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association, and is a member of the International Consumer Product Health & Safety Organization.
Additionally, Mr. Kuppens is a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel and served on the faculty of the 2007 IADC Trial Academy. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association, and is a member of the South Carolina and American Bar Associations.
A member of the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Kuppens is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. He has also been admitted pro hac vice to courts in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Missouri.
