Matthew E. Brown is a partner based in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Charleston office. His practice focuses on pharmaceutical and medical device products liability litigation. He has represented several leading pharmaceutical companies in areas including complex products liability, consumer fraud, false claims act and unfair trade practices act claims, government investigations, and actions brought by state attorneys general.
Mr. Brown has managed mass tort cases involving hundreds of plaintiffs in South Carolina and in jurisdictions across the country. He has considerable experience drafting appellate briefing; drafting various pre-trial, dispositive, and trial-related motions; preparing witnesses for deposition and trial; preparing witnesses to testify before a federal grand jury; and assisting in the coordination of discovery matters for several multidistrict pharmaceutical litigations.
Before joining Nelson Mullins, Mr. Brown was a litigation associate for a large Philadelphia law firm. He also has experience working for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Medicare and Medicaid Division, and for the general counsel of a large university hospital.
Mr. Brown has written articles that have been published in the American Journal of Law & Medicine and the Annals of Health Law, and has been a health law symposium presenter at the Benjamin J. Rush Symposium in Williamsburg, Virginia.
He earned his Juris Doctor in 2004 from the College of William and Mary School of Law, where he served on the Executive Board of the William and Mary Law Review as the Senior Articles Editor. He also served on the William and Mary Bill of Rights Journal.
