Paul J. Cox is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough’s Atlanta office. His practice is concentrated in the areas of federal and state taxation and corporate law. He regularly represents S Corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, tax-exempt organizations and both publicly-traded and closely-held C Corporations. His clients have been involved in a diverse cross-section of industries and disciplines, including: banking, financial services, venture capital, energy, manufacturing, healthcare, real estate development, entertainment, intellectual property, education, retail and professional services, and public charities, among others.
Mr. Cox has represented clients in the structuring and implementation of a wide variety of business transactions including mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, recapitalizations, joint ventures, family succession planning, venture capital funding, real estate development, and purchases and sales of businesses. He has also represented both publicly-traded and closely-held businesses in federal and state tax controversies, including the largest state tax case ever litigated in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Mr. Cox is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for Mergers & Acquisitions and Tax Law and enjoys an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Cox is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences on a variety of topics involving federal and state taxation and he has been published in multiple publications regarding those topics. He is a member of the Georgia, Kentucky and American Bar Associations.
Mr. Cox earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, in 1980 from the University of Louisville School of Law and his LL.M in Taxation from the University of Florida School of Law in 1981. He received a business degree, with high distinction, from Indiana University in 1976.
