Henry M. "Buzz" Burwell is the International Team leader within the International Practice Group and a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP where he practices in several industries. As a member of the Corporate/Securities/Tax Division he has more than 30 years of experience supporting firm Practice Groups including: International Law and Public Policy; Aerospace and Defense; Sustainable Energy and Agriculture and Employment Law.
Mr. Burwell and has served as lead counsel in more than 100 manufacturing start-ups in the U.S. and other North American countries. He has extensive experience in representing multinational businesses in a variety of transnational trade and commercial undertakings, including establishment of entities, import and export trade, customs disputes, inbound and outbound investments, defense procurement, and aviation transactions in more than 20 countries.
He has been presented with numerous pro bono service awards such as the Ben Landey Pro Bono Award from Catholic Social Services of Atlanta, the Nelson Mullins Pro Bono Award and the Japan American Association of South Carolina pro bono award for community service to a non-profit association which he founded and twice served as its president.
He served as chair of the advisory board of the University of South Carolina joint degree program for the International Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor degrees, as a member of the University of South Carolina Upstate School of Business Advisory Board since 1990 and on the South Carolina District Export Council of the U.S. Department of Commerce from 1990-2001.
He is the founder and editor in chief of the North Carolina Journal of International Law & Commercial Regulation (1976) and founder of the International Law Committee of the South Carolina Bar. He is frequent lecturer for the Area Development magazine on foreign direct investment in the United States and the North American South Asian Bar Association on matters of international trade and investment.
From 1978-95, Mr. Burwell was Assistant Staff Judge Advocate and Senior Advisor, International Law Division, U.S. Central Command, United States Air Force, where he was responsible for legal sufficiency reviews of international and joint venture procurement contracts for USAF CENTCOM in Southwest Asia comprising 17 countries. He served as general counsel of Pinehurst Airlines, Inc. from 1978-82.
He is member of the South Carolina Bar, the Oregon State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar and is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina U.S., the Court of International Trade and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
