Richard Farrier is the managing partner of the Charleston office of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, and his practice focuses on complex commercial litigation. He recently won a $484 million jury verdict, the largest in South Carolina history in a RICO case including a Ponzi scheme. The case involved a stock loan product, over 70 financially sophisticated claimants, and assets, evidence, and witnesses in multiple international jurisdictions. Past success does not indicate the likelihood of success in any future legal representation.
Mr. Farrier handles a wide range of complex business litigation matters involving high exposure or risk to his clients. Below is a representative selection of cases tried by Mr. Farrier to a jury verdict.

- Kelby v. T-H Myrtle Beach Limited Partnership, et. al.: claim of traumatically induced aneurysm
- Scott v. Nationsbank, et. al.: claim involving land sale fraud and liability of national financial institution
- McQueeney v. The Dime Savings Bank of NY: alleged liability of financial institution
- Pittman v. C&S Bank: conversion claim against financial institution
- Walker v. Ingersoll-Rand: dismemberment products liability claim involving plastic injection molding machine
- Melrose Point, Inc. et. al. v. Melrose Co., Inc., et al.: claim pursuant to the Interstate Land Sales Full Disclosure Act involving Dafuskie Island, South Carolina.
Based on his extensive jury trial experience, in 2009, Mr. Farrier was inducted into the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates.
Mr. Farrier has tried numerous cases in nonjury settings and has successfully resolved litigation through pre-trial dismissals and settlements. He has represented clients ranging from international insurance companies and oil conglomerates to national for-profit hospitals to local developers, investors, and closely held corporations. These cases have involved claims of ground water contamination, patent infringement, unfair competition and trade practices, violations of healthcare regulations, breaches of contract or fiduciary duties, partnership and shareholder disputes, thefts of trade secrets, bad faith denial of insurance coverage, and other allegations of improper conduct in business transactions.
Mr. Farrier is regularly selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America and South Carolina Super Lawyers for his practice in the areas of Bet-the-Company litigation and Commercial Litigation. He was named in 2011 by The Best Lawyers in America as the 2012 Charleston, S.C., Bet-the-Company Litigation Lawyer of the Year. In 2010 he was certified as a life member of both the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum. He has an AV Martindale Hubbell rating.
Mr. Farrier is also a member of the Charleston County Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association. Mr. Farrier has been inducted into the Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame.
A member of the South Carolina Bar, Mr. Farrier is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Farrier served as law clerk to Chief Judge Charles E. Simons, Jr. of the District Court.
Mr. Farrier earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1985, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from The Citadel in 1981.
