Rivers S. Stilwell is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Greenville where he practices in the areas of business and commercial litigation, product liability, and construction law. Mr. Stilwell has trial and appellate experience involving financial institutions, class actions, computer software, business torts, public service districts, product liability, and construction. He represents the local newspaper on First Amendment, public access, and FOIA issues. He has both taught and written on electronic discovery and trade secrets. Mr. Stilwell has represented clients in matters in South Carolina, California, Georgia and North Carolina.
Mr. Stilwell is a member of the South Carolina Bar (Construction Law Section) and the American Bar Association (Litigation Section - Committee on Commercial and Business Litigation; Business Law Section - Consumer Financial Services Committee; Media Law Forum). He was the 1997 recipient of the Richard W. Riley Award for Pro Bono Service from Western Carolina Legal Services and serves on the Executive Committee of the Alliance for Quality Education. Mr. Stilwell served as an original member of the City of Greenville’s Design and Preservation Committee. He is listed in South Carolina Super Lawyers (2009 edition).
In 1994, he earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law where he was a member of the Virginia Tax Review. Prior to entering law school, Mr. Stilwell served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer for three years. During law school, he was recalled to active duty for service in Operation Desert Storm. As an undergraduate, he was an Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts, with distinction, in 1987.
