Robert O. Meriwether is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia. He concentrates his litigation practice on the defense of product liability, toxic torts and complex litigation matters. A member of the South Carolina Bar and the North Carolina Bar, Mr. Meriwether has represented a variety of industries, including glass and plastic manufacturers, elevator/escalator manufacturers, airlines, asbestos product manufacturers, marine and industrial equipment manufacturers, and the manufactured housing industry, in toxic tort and complex litigation cases. He has handled thousands of cases in South Carolina, North Carolina, and other southeastern states. Additionally, Mr. Meriwether has experience in alternative dispute resolution, having participated in numerous arbitrations and mediations.  

Mr. Meriwether has tried a number of asbestos personal injury cases in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, on behalf of manufacturers of thermal insulation, friction products, and marine and industrial equipment –including pump and valve manufacturers. He has also participated in the defense and trial of asbestos personal injury cases in North Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia, Texas, and other Southern states during his over 20 years of defense work. He has tried other cases, including product liability and intellectual property cases, and handled appeals to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Meriwether has coordinated the preparation and presentation of defense experts in various disciplines, including medicine, toxicology, industrial hygiene, the history of medical and occupational safety, and related fields. He has also taken a leading role in opposing such experts presented by the plaintiffs' bar.
 
Mr. Meriwether is admitted to practice before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Courts for the Districts of North Carolina and the District of South Carolina. A member of the American Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Richland County Bar Association and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys' Association, Mr. Meriwether was the 1991 recipient of the South Carolina Pro Bono Award, following his trial of a lengthy federal court case over the rights of incarcerated juveniles in South Carolina. 

Mr. Meriwether earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1987. During law school, he was an associate justice of the Moot Court Bar and a member of Delta Theta Phi. In 1982, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, cum honorem, from the University of the South, where he was a Wilkins Scholar, a National Merit Scholar, and a member of the Order of Gownsmen.
