Sarah Rittling is a senior policy and legal advisor for EducationCounsel LLC. She provides counsel to clients on education policy matters related to workforce development, early childhood education, elementary and secondary education, higher education, and life-long learning.

Ms. Rittling is a former counsel to the Honorable Lamar Alexander, ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, and Labor, and Pensions, Subcommittee on Children and Families, where she advised the senator on education policy and judiciary issues and was responsible for developing comprehensive agendas in education at all levels and in workforce development.

Before serving Sen. Alexander, she served as counsel for education and labor for U.S. Rep. Michael N. Castle, whom she advised on education and labor matters before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. She also held responsibility for matters before the Subcommittee on Education Reform, including reauthorization of the National School Lunch and Child Nutrition Act, the Vocational and Technical Education Act, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Ms. Rittling also has served as a legislative assistant and deputy press secretary to U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays. She served as a law clerk in the Circuit Court of Wicomico (Maryland) County.     

She earned her Juris Doctor in 1999 from Syracuse University College of Law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship, where she was captain of the NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country team.  Ms Rittling lives on Capitol Hill with her husband, Patrick Lyden , and their daughter.
