Susan Hills Nelson is an associate of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP who practices in Columbia in the areas of business litigation and franchise law and litigation, with an emphasis on automobile franchise litigation.
Ms. Nelson previously clerked for Judge John D. Geathers of the South Carolina Court of Appeals. Prior to clerking, she worked as a Staff Attorney for the Court of Appeals and she has experience in all aspects of appellate practice.
She earned her Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from the Charleston School of Law in May 2009. She was the top graduate in her law school class. While in law school, Ms. Nelson successfully argued a case as a student practitioner in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. She was an Associate Research Editor on the Charleston Law Review and a member of Moot Court. She received CALI Excellence for the Future Awards for Property, Constitutional Law, Equity, White Collar Corporate Crime, and Healthcare Law.
Prior to law school, Ms. Nelson worked for several large New York law firms as a paralegal. After 9/11, she volunteered her time and skills notarizing affidavits of loss for families of lost victims of the World Trade Center attack. During law school, Ms. Nelson received special recognition for volunteering 100+ hours of pro bono service.
Ms. Nelson is the author of Separation of Church & Church: An Overview of Episcopal Church Property Battles, 2 CHARLESTON L. REV. 867 (2008). Ms. Nelson earned her Bachelor of Science from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in May 1999.
