William A. Scofield, Jr. is a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Boston office. Mr. Scofield has more than 25 years of experience in general and intellectual property litigation, trademarks, copyrights, licensing, and intellectual property counseling. He focuses on intellectual property litigation, including plaintiff’s and defendant’s cases involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.

He has represented a diverse group of clients in matters involving technologies such as semiconductors, medical devices, high speed liquid chromatography, viscometers, biotechnology, and drug development screening.

Mr. Scofield’s notable experience includes:

  • Successfully represented a start-up drug discovery biotechnology company accused of patent infringement during IPO.
  • Representing a technology design firm in multiple cases involving its intellectual property rights to certain wired and wireless telecommunication systems for portable access to Internet and phone service.
  • Successfully represented a defendant in a patent infringement case involving outdoor positioning systems that use radio frequency signals to track and locate critical, portable devices and personnel in large healthcare facilities.
  • Successfully represented a defendant in a patent infringement action related to viscometer used in high performance liquid chromatography analytical system. Jury verdict of non-infringement upheld on appeal.
  • Successfully represented a plaintiff in a case involving misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition in the sale of high speed liquid chromatography systems.

Mr. Scofield is admitted to practice before the Massachusetts Bar, the U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and a Volunteer Mediator at North Shore Community Mediation Center.  Mr. Scofield is listed on the Massachusetts Super Lawyers list (2006-2011).

In 1978, Mr. Scofield earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Boston University School of Law.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1972 from Wesleyan University.
