CPSC Product Safety
Information Database Now Online
On Saturday, April 2, 2011, the CPSC posted the first consumer reports of product related injuries and risks of harm to its online searchable database. Available at www.SaferProducts.gov. The CPSC initially instituted a soft launch of the database in January. Reports received during the soft launch period are not posted to the website, but were provided to product manufacturers for comment and may be released pursuant to FOIA requests.
The CPSC began accepting reports of product related incidents for posting to its online searchable database on March 11, 2011. Within five days of receiving a consumer incident report, the CPSC will forward the information to the manufacturer for comment. The manufacturer then has ten days to respond.
If the information provided by the consumer meets minimum requirements, it will be posted on the searchable database along with any response from the manufacturer. Manufacturers are reminded that they should register through the CPSC’s business portal in order to ensure they will receive timely notice of reports involving their products and have opportunity to respond prior to public posting.
