Christopher T. Cushing, based in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Washington, DC, office, has more than 20 years of experience in the nation's capital. Mr. Cushing represents clients in transactions and investments in which there is an interaction among political, business, regulatory, and legal environments. His clients include multinational corporations, nonprofit organizations, state and local governments, major trade associations, and domestic and foreign start-up ventures.
Mr. Cushing's practice includes assisting government and business clients in public issues management, strategic advice, and legislative and regulatory advocacy for appropriations, defense and homeland security, economic development, healthcare policy, public/private partnerships, renewable energy, tax policy, and state and local government issues.
He is the former managing partner of WolfBlock Public Strategies, LLC. From 1988 through 2004, Mr. Cushing founded and served as president of The Commonwealth Group, a multistate government relations firm. From 1985 to 1988, he was a principal advisor to former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole. Before that, Mr. Cushing was Director of Government Relations for Boston Capital Corporation, the nation's third largest owner/investor of apartment properties in the United States one of the nation's leading real estate financing and investment firms, with multifamily housing and commercial holdings in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Mr. Cushing serves as an instructor for Beecher Carlson's ISS-accredited TopBoards training program. Topics include "Proper Influence: Responsible Federal, State and Local Lobbying," focusing on best practices for effective and ethical lobbying, and "What Your Board of Directors Must Know About a Crisis Management Plan," examining the development of an effective crisis management plan, including anticipating and preparing for a crisis and handling communication and public relations issues.
A proficient public marketing strategist, Mr. Cushing has lectured at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the Institute of Management & Administration, the Public Forum Institute, and is a frequent speaker in the United States and abroad. He is a member of the International Association of Emergency Managers, the National Defense Industrial Association, the American Association of Grant Professionals, and the American League of Lobbyists.
Mr. Cushing is a Board Member of the Virginia Trust for Historic Preservation, the Lee-Fendall House Museum, and the Alexandria, Virginia Citizen Corps Council.
He received a B.A. in political science and a B.A. in economics from Bowdoin College.
