Four Nelson Mullins Attorneys, Paralegals Recognized for Pro Bono Service
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 27, 2011) – Two attorneys and two paralegals in Nelson Mullins' Columbia office were recognized for their commitment to pro bono service.
At an awards ceremony, attorneys and paralegals were honored with Claude M. Scarborough, Jr., and E.W. Mullins, Sr., Paralegal Pro Bono Awards. The Scarborough Awards honor Nelson Mullins attorneys who have made a special commitment to pro bono service. The Mullins Awards honor paralegals who exemplify the Firm's commitment to pro bono service.
2009 Claude M. Scarborough, Jr., Award
Columbia associate Candace Jackson received the 2009 Scarborough Award for her work on the Matthews v. Thomas et al. section 1983 case. The plaintiff brought action alleging unlawful arrest, unlawful detention, malicious prosecution, civil conspiracy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. An appeal was heard in 2010, but was not successful for the client.
2010 Claude M. Scarborough, Jr., Award
Columbia associate Jay Thompson was recognized with the 2010 Scarborough Award. Mr. Thompson, in collaboration with Jim Lehman, Bill Wood, Jase Glenn, and Jason Luther, filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the Christian Legal Society and Prison Fellowship in support of a Texas inmate, Harvey Leroy Sossamon, who claimed denial of religious rights.
Mr. Thompson also represented the Alliance Defense Fund and provided legal advice and assistance on S.C. law regarding constitutionality of prayer at city council meetings. He handles criminal domestic violence cases as well.
2009 E.W. Mullins, Sr., Paralegal Pro Bono Award
Columbia senior paralegal Diane Argabright was recognized with the 2009 Mullins Award because she always goes above and beyond to assist with any pro bono matter that an attorney may have. She has helped on many civil and family court appointed cases and has done an outstanding job in a variety of cases.
2010 E.W. Mullins, Sr., Paralegal Pro Bono Award
Greg Crump, a practice assistant in the Columbia office, received a 2010 Mullins Award for his work on the South Carolina Department of Corrections case. He has provided invaluable help in connection with a lawsuit brought by the Firm against the South Carolina Department of Corrections on behalf of and seeking relief for mentally ill prisoners. This case is expected to be tried in 2012.
