Raleigh Associate Joe Dowdy Recognized
by Nelson Mullins for Achievements

dowdyRALEIGH (June 28, 2011) -- For overall achievement and outstanding performance, Raleigh attorney Joe Dowdy is the recipient of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP's Renaissance Associate Award. The award is given annually to one associate who best demonstrates achievement in the areas of client service, training, pro bono, marketing, recruiting, and productivity.

Mr. Dowdy joined Nelson Mullins in 2006 and practices in the areas of complex business litigation, with an emphasis on commercial and financial services litigation and appellate advocacy. He has demonstrated excellent client service abilities and marketing efforts, has acted as a mentor to a number of younger lawyers and lawyers transitioning back into private practice, and has devoted much of his time to the Firm’s recruiting efforts.

“Joe has achieved excellent results for his clients, and he is dedicated to them and the Firm,” said John Jennings, the Nelson Mullins partner who chairs the Associates Committee. “As a person and a lawyer, Joe sets the example for all of us.”

Mr. Dowdy is one of the leaders of the Firm’s regional representation of a number of national lenders and loan servicers, and he is heavily involved in much of the Firm’s appellate practice in North Carolina. In each area of practice, he has employed creative strategies and obtained positive results for clients and for the Firm, even in difficult circumstances.

Building on his record of positive results, Mr. Dowdy also has become one of the Firm’s strongest young marketers. He has attended numerous financial services conferences and has written or contributed to the writing of a number of articles of interest to the industry. In 2009, he co-authored a law review article concerning the recent financial crisis, “Whither Wachovia? Wells Fargo Wins the Battle for the Storied North Carolina Banking Institution,” 13 N.C. Banking Inst. 167.  Mr. Dowdy has also written about the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 (CAFA), the National Bank Act, the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), and other issues of law affecting the financial services industry. Mr. Dowdy attended the IADC trial academy in Palo Alto, California, in 2010.  He has worked hard to build on existing client relationships and to bring new clients to the Firm.

Since becoming a lawyer, Mr. Dowdy has volunteered his time to work with law students in the mediation, client counseling, and client interviewing curriculum at the UNC School of Law.  He also has been one of the most active members of the Firm’s recruiting committee.

Perhaps Mr. Dowdy’s biggest accomplishment is his substantial contribution to mentoring other professionals at the Firm. He has worked with young lawyers from all over the Firm, both on and off the CACE Team. “I am proud of them all,” said Mr. Dowdy, “It’s probably hard not to win the Renaissance Award when you look at the talented individuals who have been doing the work for which I have been taking credit.”

“I don’t think I can say, given everyone I know at the Firm, that I am the most deserving, but you won’t find anyone more grateful,” Mr. Dowdy added. “I hope this award says I’ve had a positive contribution to the promising careers of some younger lawyers, and I take a lot of pride in that.”
