Hubbard Recognized in Inaugural Leadership in Law Awards

HubbardCOLUMBIA, S.C. (Oct. 7, 2009) -- In its first Leadership in Law Awards, S.C. Lawyers Weekly honored Columbia partner William Hubbard in September for service to both the legal profession and the community at large.

The publication held a reception at the Harbour Club in Charleston to honor the 10 attorneys selected. The recipients "have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the law, in the profession, in the support of their community, and in mentoring," according to the legal media organization.

"If there's anyone who has put South Carolina on the legal maps of the country and world recently, it would be William C. Hubbard," the publication wrote in a profile of the Columbia partner.

Mr. Hubbard is the first South Carolinian to Chair the ABA's House of Delegates, the second highest elected position in the organization. He also served as the inaugural Chairman of the World Justice Project and, as such, led discussions around the world promoting the Rule of Law. The program recently became a free-standing nonprofit organization, and he has been asked to serve as its first Chairman.

He is a recipient of the American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the U.S. Fourth Circuit and was the Richland County Bar Association's 2008 John F. Williams Award recipient.

He has been active in the community for many years, serving on the USC Board of Trustees since 1986 and was its Chairman from 1996 to 2000. He has been an active fund-raiser for the proposed new USC Law School and was instrumental in helping establish the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center on Professionalism at the school, which benefits with professional growth many generations of young lawyers. He is a founding member of City Year - Columbia. He is a former president of the area Council of Boy Scouts, has served on the board of Voices for South Carolina's Children, and has received South Carolina's highest civilian service honor, the Order of the Palmetto, for his many contributions.

"Any of us who have the privileges of our profession and our community are obligated to try to give back and try to improve whatever we're in," he told S.C. Lawyers Weekly. "From a personal standpoint... it's very gratifying to see the fruits of your labor on a macro level."
