COLUMBIA, SC - A dedicated attorney for children will begin a one-year Fellowship at South Carolina Legal Services in June funded by a grant and donations from the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP law firm.

The South Carolina Legal Services lawyer designated as the Nelson Mullins Fellow is Olivia S. Jones, a bi-lingual fourth year attorney. Ms. Jones has served with South Carolina Legal Services in the Columbia office since November 2008. Prior to that she served as a staff attorney to the South Carolina Administrative Law Court. At the University of South Carolina School of Law she served as president of the Pro Bono Board and as Articles Editor for the American Bar Association Real Property, Probate & Trust Journal. She speaks fluent Spanish.

South Carolina Legal Services is the only statewide law firm serving the civil legal needs of the state's indigents.

Executive Director Andrea Loney expressed her opinion: "South Carolina Legal Services is grateful to have been selected to receive a Nelson Mullins Fellow during a time when we are experiencing budget reductions. This is just another example of the ways our law firm and therefore, low-income clients continue to benefit from the generosity of Nelson Mullins.  The Fellow will work with our education unit head and the litigation director to expand the Firm's representation of children in the areas of special education, school suspension and expulsion. In addition, she will work with the benefits unit head to represent children in Medicaid reduction cases."

Nelson Mullins has been awarding Fellowship grants since 1997 through its donor-directed fund maintained by the Central Carolina Community Foundation.  All grants are to assist with children's issues.  The Firm also makes annual donations to many Legal Services Corporation grantees in states where Nelson Mullins maintains offices.

Nelson Mullins Managing Partner David Dukes stated, "While every practicing lawyer has an obligation to perform civil legal work pro bono for the less fortunate, no organization does a better job of representing the state's indigent population than South Carolina Legal Services. They have the experience, the dedication and zeal to represent our less fortunate fellow citizens. Nelson Mullins has been a proud supporter of South Carolina Legal Services for many years, and we are pleased to be able to make this Fellowship a reality."

Established in 1897, Nelson Mullins has more than 420 attorneys and government relations professionals practicing from 12 office locations in the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia.  For more information on the Firm, go to www.nelsonmullins.com, or call 803.255.9794.
